Wynford Reynolds Music While You Work BBC War WW2 Radio Hand Signed Letter
CHAU4759 A rare opportunity to secure this large A4 sized 1942 antique personally written letter from Wynford Reynolds historic BBC radio organiser and bandleader, best known as the influential organiser of the legendary wartime radio programme Music While You Work. Appointed to the role by the BBC in 1941, he was responsible for overseeing the output, style, and strict "scientific" requirements of the show, which was designed to boost factory productivity during World War II. This vintage 1942 wartime letter from Wyndord Reynolds on BBC headed paper was to a military Major regarding his arrangements being considered for broadcasting on his show. It is personally written typed and hand signed by Wynford Reynolds with two small file holes, centrally folded (which is how I will send) with some browning which is side and border ageing but overall allowing very good condition. Please see all our historic musicians, big band, and conductors letters secured from this same BBC collection at our store.
Music While You Work Organiser: Reynolds directed the tone and musical style of the programme. He conducted extensive research by visiting factories to interview workers and managers, ensuring the music effectively countered background machinery noise without causing distractions.
Enforcing Strict Rules: Under his supervision, the BBC enforced strict programming rules. He famously banned certain tracks, like "Deep in the Heart of Texas," because the clapping sections caused factory workers to stop working and bang their tools.
Bandleader and Conductor: In addition to his executive role, he was an accomplished musician who formed and conducted Wynford Reynolds and his Orchestra.
Marching and Waltzing: He served for many years as the conductor of the BBC's semi-resident Raeburn Orchestra on the light music programme Marching and Waltzing.
Final Days - Reynolds suffered from ill health in the late 1950s but expressed hopes to return to regular broadcasting by January 1959 while developing new program formats. However, he passed away in January 1959, ending a highly influential career that helped shape British home-front morale and workplace radio.
