Willy Bierling was a German woodcarver and actor from the Bavarian village of Oberammergau. He is best known for portraying St John the Evangelist in the world-famous 1934 Oberammergau Passion Play.

The 1934 production was highly significant as it marked the 300th anniversary jubilee of the historic Oberammergau Passion Play. Bierling shared the stage with other prominent local performers of the era, including Alois Lang as Jesus Christ and Hubert Mayr as Saint Peter. Because the play's traditional rules dictate that all participants must be native or long-term residents of the village, Bierling worked as a professional woodcarver to support himself outside of the performance seasons.

Like many male performers from Oberammergau, Bierling was drafted into the German military during World War II. Following the war, records from TIME Magazine show that he became a prisoner of war held in the United States. In the late 1940s, when the village attempted to revive the festival, the American Military Government initially restricted Bierling and co-stars like Alois Lang from staging public events due to mandatory post-war denazification vetting procedures.
