Thunderclap Newman was an eccentric British rock band formed in 1969 by Pete Townshend of The Who. The group achieved instant legendary status when their debut psychedelic anthem, "Something in the Air," knocked The Beatles off the Number 1 spot on the UK charts. The band was a fascinating trio of musical misfits, consisting of eccentric jazz pianist Andy Newman, hippie songwriter John Keen, and fifteen-year-old guitar prodigy Jimmy McCulloch Despite their immense talent and backing by rock royalty, internal creative friction caused the band to permanently split up by 1971. Today, they are remembered as one of the era's greatest one-hit wonders, leaving behind a timeless song that still frequently features in major Hollywood movie soundtracks.
