"...Prowling Cat is a rare and unique 1819 Chinese ink painting by the Qing dynasty artist and local poet Ji Biao. The painting is explicitly signed and dated to the fifth day of the first lunar month of the jimao year (equivalent to 30 January 1819) during the Jiaqing reign. In traditional Chinese folklore, it was widely believed that rendering or hanging a depiction of a hunting cat on this specific day would ritually guard the household against mice and insect pests for the entire year. The scroll features a calligraphic inscription translating to: "On the fifth day of the first month of jimao year, Jiaqing reign, for uncle Yuancun, by Ji Biao (Wufeng)..."
