Percy P.S.G. O'Donnell BBC WW2 Military Radio Sheet Music Hand Signed Letter

CHAU4760 A rare opportunity to secure this vintage 1939 wartime BBC letter from historic BBC wartime band leader P.S.G. O'Donnell. The letter is in reply to a Military Major who had included his private composed music scores of Magyar Melodies and Rhapsodies to play with the BBC military band in the war and how PSG O'Donnell agreed to contact him with a view to using these in future military broadcast (please enlarge scan to read its fascinating contents for your full examination) - It is folded just once where originally posted otherwise mint.

"..Major Percy Sylvester Gilmore O'Donnell (1882–1945), usually credited as P.S.G. O'Donnell, was a distinguished military bandmaster who served as the conductor of the BBC Military Band during the late 1930s and early 1940s. In 1927, his brother Walton O’Donnell founded the BBC Wireless Military Band, which became famous for its highly sophisticated classical and orchestral arrangements. Following Walton's departure, Major P.S.G. O'Donnell took over as the principal conductor in 1937.

Under P.S.G. O'Donnell's leadership throughout the early years of World War II, the band became a vital cultural symbol. They provided morale-boosting live radio broadcasts and produced historic, patriotic programs like The Soldier Sings. Outside the studio, he took the band on massive regional morale tours. This included a high-profile 1942 tour of Northern Ireland, where they performed for British and American troops stationed at naval, military, and RAF installations.

Despite the band's enormous listener popularity and immense prestige, the BBC controversially chose to axe the ensemble as part of wartime restructuring. Overriding widespread public protest, Major O'Donnell conducted the BBC Military Band's final performance at 9:40 PM on Tuesday, 16 March 1943. He passed away two years later, in 1945.."
