Flying Officer Norman Tacey Fairfax (Service Number 109938) was a real-life Royal Air Force officer whose incredible World War II evasion behind enemy lines served as a cornerstone of British military history. Serving with the RAF No. 107 Squadron, his light bomber was shot down over German-occupied Europe. Instead of surrendering, Fairfax went "on the run" and successfully linked up with the French Resistance underground escape networks. With their immense help, he navigated the highly dangerous evasion routes back to Great Britain, avoiding a POW camp entirely. His real-life courage famously inspired BBC comedy writers decades later, who borrowed his distinct name for the bumbling, disguised British airman "Flying Officer Fairfax" in the iconic sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!.
