Mike Walling was a versatile English comic actor and screenwriter who achieved widespread recognition for his work across several beloved British television sitcoms. Born in Salford in 1950, he transitioned from a career as a teacher after winning the talent show New Faces as part of the comedy double act Mr Carline and Mr Walling. He found his breakout role as Eric, the well-meaning but bumbling brother-in-law, in the BBC comedy series Brush Strokes, appearing throughout its run from 1986 to 1991. Walling seamlessly combined his acting talents with a prolific career behind the camera as a scriptwriter, contributing to hit television comedies such as Birds of a Feather, ChuckleVision, Me and My Girl, and The Brittas Empire. Over the subsequent decades, he remained a familiar and welcome face on British television screens with guest appearances in major series including Coronation Street, Last of the Summer Wine, My Family, and Not Going Out before his passing in 2020.
