Lew Ayres was a highly respected American actor whose career spanned over 65 years, best known for his breakthrough role as the disillusioned German soldier Paul Bäumer in the landmark anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s, he achieved immense popularity as the titular, compassionate physician in MGM's famous Dr. Kildare film series. His career faced severe backlash when he declared himself a conscientious objector during World War II, though he went on to serve with great distinction as a non-combatant medic in the Pacific Theater. Ayres successfully reclaimed his status as a respected Hollywood star after the war, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role as a sympathetic doctor in Johnny Belinda (1948) and starring alongside Olivia de Havilland in the film noir The Dark Mirror (1946).
