John Payne was a highly versatile American actor and singer who successfully transitioned from a 1940s musical heartthrob into a rugged 1950s action star. He is most widely recognized today for playing the idealistic attorney Fred Gailey in the beloved Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947). However, as the 1950s arrived, Payne reinvented his career by starring in a string of gritty film noirs and tough Westerns, such as Kansas City Confidential (1952) and 99 River Street (1953). He further solidified his star power during this era by transitioning to television, producing and starring as the titular gun-for-hire in the popular Western series The Restless Gun, which aired from 1957 to 1959
