James Welldon Victorian Harrow School Headmaster Winston Churchill Hand Signed Card

pfas162 Antique 5" x 4.5" card housing an affixed autograph of the signature of  James Edward Cowell Welldon (1854–1937) when he was serving his famous tenure as the Headmaster of Harrow School (1885–1898)—the exact era during which he famously educated and mentored a young Winston Churchill. Because this document predates his 1898 consecration as the Bishop of Calcutta, it correctly features his personal surname signature rather than a diocesan title. This impeccably dated 1893 artifact carries fantastic cross-over appeal for collectors of Victorian educational history, British Raj figures, and Churchill-related memorabilia.. The autograph is firmly fixed to the card so cannot be removed but in fairness the card has preserved the signature throughout time.  There is ageing which you can see the browning to upper part of the signing (see scan) but otherwise is great so overall I graded very good (vg minus to vg) allowing its ageing. 

"....During his tenure as Headmaster of Harrow School, James Edward Cowell Welldon developed a famously close, supportive, and enduring mentorship with a young Winston Churchill, who attended the school from 1888 to 1893. Recognizing Churchill's brilliant but highly unconventional intellect—which clashed severely with Harrow’s rigid traditional curriculum—Welldon frequently intervened to protect the future Prime Minister from academic failure, famously granting him a passing mark on his entrance exam based purely on potential. Instead of forcing Churchill into traditional Greek and Latin studies, Welldon astutely encouraged him to master the English language, public speaking, and essay writing, effectively laying the foundation for Churchill's legendary oratorical career. The mutual respect between the two ran deep; Welldon remained a trusted confidant and spiritual advisor well into Churchill's early political life, and Churchill later immortalised his headmaster with immense fondness and gratitude in his classic autobiography, My Early Life..."
