Stephen Roche (born 28 November 1959) is an Irish former professional road bicycle racer renowned for completing cycling's Triple Crown in 1987 by winning the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France, and the UCI Road World Championshipsthe only rider besides Eddy Merckx to achieve this feat in a single season. Born in Dundrum, County Dublin, Roche began cycling at age 13, inspired by fellow Irish rider Sean Kelly, and turned professional in 1981 with the Peugeot-Esso-Michelin team after a successful amateur career that included national championships. Over a 13-year professional career spanning 1981 to 1993, he rode for teams including Peugeot (19811983), La Redoute (19841985), Carrera (19861987 and 19921993), Fagor (19881989), HistorSigma (1990), and Tonton TapisGB (1991), amassing victories in major classics such as MilanSan Remo (1986) and Il Lombardia (1982), as well as stage wins across all three Grand Tours.
