Seamus "Shay" Elliott was an Irish professional road bicycle racer widely regarded as Ireland's first major international cycling star and the first Irishman to establish himself as a professional rider in continental Europe.  He achieved several historic firsts for Irish cycling, including becoming the first Irish rider to compete in the Tour de France, to win a stage in the Tour, to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France (which he held for three days in 1963), and to lead the Vuelta a España.
