Harold Lowe BBC WW2 Forces War Radio To Military Smoking Hand Signed Letter
CHAU4767 A rare opportunity to secure the autograph of Harold Lowe who was a highly active BBC conductor, musical arranger, and radio director who helped shape the sound of British "light music" and musical theatre broadcasting during the golden age of BBC radio. This vintage 1940 official wartime letter specially typed sent on headed BBC paper to a military Major si all about how he will be including the Major's compositions on his Forces Radio Show which I invite you to enlarge and read. During World War II and the late 1940s, his broadcasts provided essential morale-boosting entertainment across the UK via the BBC Home Service and Forces Programme and this letter is for the music of that show. It is personally written typed and hand signed by Harold Lowe and whilst folded where originally posted (which is how I will send) and lightly aged (two small left side holes from filing) it is great condition. Please see all our historic musicians, big band, and conductors letters secured from this same BBC collection at our store. (Look at how he refers to Lady Nicotine in the letter and what she is doing to his throat - an expression for smoking during the 1940s)
"....Harold Lowe was a highly active conductor, musical arranger, and radio director who helped shape the sound of British "light music" and musical theater broadcasting during the golden age of BBC radio. While he is not a household name today like some classical symphony conductors, he was famous within the British entertainment industry for bridging the gap between classical orchestras and popular theatre music. Lowe’s most famous lasting contribution was his work with the BBC Theatre Orchestra which was later renamed and survives today as the world-famous BBC Concert Orchestra. Alongside conductors like Stanford Robinson and Walter Goehr, Lowe was one of the core maestros hired to build the ensemble's reputation. During World War II and the late 1940s, his broadcasts provided essential morale-boosting entertainment across the UK via the BBC Home Service and Forces Programme. In the post-WWII era of the mid-1940s, Lowe transitioned heavily into administrative and library leadership for the BBC Music Library...."
