Frederick Gell Anglican Bishop Of Madras India Victorian Hand Signed Autograph
CHAU4760 Antique 6" x 6" card housing an affixed antique autograph of the signature of Frederick Gell (1820–1902), who served as the Anglican Bishop of Madras under the British Raj from 1861 to 1899. It is signed using the centuries-old "episcopal" formatting traditionally required of senior colonial church leaders, where the signer omits their surname. In this specific configuration, "F. Madras" (or "F.M. Madras") combines his first initials (Frederick or Frederick Madras) directly with the legal Latin designation of his see (Madras). This exact styling was used exclusively on high-level official correspondence, ordination certificates, and ecclesiastical decrees throughout his historic 38-year tenure, providing clear confirmation of the document's official origin and authenticity. The autograph has its sides firmly fixed to the card so cannot be removed but in fairness the card has preserved the signature throughout time. There is ageing and places to allow (see scan) so even though flat on a blue card I graded fair .You can see above the autograph there is also the Bishop's personal embossed stationery crested monogram at the head of the page for the ultimate in lifetime COA.
"...Bishop Frederick Gell (1820–1902) was a highly revered British theologian who served as the Anglican Bishop of Madras (now Chennai, India) for an extraordinary 38 years, making him one of the longest-serving colonial bishops in the history of the British Raj. Educated at Cambridge, Gell arrived in India in 1861 during a critical period of post-rebellion imperial restructuring and quickly became known for his deep humility, structural administrative skill, and progressive approach to local leadership. Rather than maintaining a distant colonial oversight, he spent his decades-long tenure traveling extensively across Southern India, focusing heavily on expanding higher education, establishing native schools, and actively ordaining a significant number of indigenous Indian clergy to high-ranking leadership roles within the church. By the time of his retirement in 1899, Gell's legacy was defined by his profound cross-cultural respect and his dedication to building a self-sustaining, locally led Indian church network, earning him immense admiration from both the British administration and the local population..."
