E. R. "Bob" Allan was a courageous merchant seaman who survived the perilous Arctic Convoys of the Second World War and went on to found the Russian Convoy Club. He established this veterans' association to unite the brave survivors who had risked their lives in freezing northern waters to deliver vital military supplies to Soviet ports. For decades, Allan passionately campaigned for the British government to officially recognize these veterans with a dedicated service medal, a push that frequently faced Cold War political resistance. While the UK delayed, he successfully forged deep international bonds, earning numerous official honors and medals directly from the Russian government for his wartime service. When the club finally disbanded in 2005 due to the advancing age of its members, Allan proudly presented their official National Standard to the Imperial War Museum to permanently preserve their historic legacy.
