Born in 1917, he served with distinction as a military major during the Second World War before entering Parliament in 1952. He went on to hold two of the highest offices in the British government, serving as Defence Secretary from 1964 to 1970 and navigating the nation through turbulent economic times as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1974 to 1979. Known for his robust debating style, intellectual depth, and mass public appeal, he later served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party before being elevated to the House of Lords. Beyond his political career, he was a prolific author, photographer, and champion of the arts until his passing in 2015.
