After spending nearly three decades working as a professional hairdresser in Nottingham, she pivoted to acting full-time and beat out thousands of hopefuls to secure a major television contract. This victory landed her the high-profile role of matriarch Maggie Calder in the long-running British soap opera Emmerdale. Though her newly formed on-screen family was written out of the village after nine months due to a sharp critical backlash against the reality-casting format, Whitehead had already established a foundational screen portfolio with appearances in popular regional dramas like Crossroads and Playing the Field. She later continued her television career into the mid-2000s, notably appearing in the BBC series The Chase alongside Gaynor Faye.
