CHAU4760 A rare opportunity to secure the autograph of Harry Mark Campbell-Ricketts (1911–1990) usually credited professionally as Campbell Ricketts, who was an accomplished military musician who transitioned into a highly influential, senior role as a post-war BBC Radio music producer and executive. He is most famously remembered as the creative force behind one of the longest-running programmes in radio history and this letter is to a Military Major about the music he had sent to Campbell Ricketts that he had performed at the 1902 Military Coronation Bazaar so was hoping Campbell Ricketts would feature it on the BBC 1940s broadcasts - please read and enlarge (apologies as my scanner has lost the reverse yellow character colour of the letter in its scanning where the signature is - please refer to image 1 for the yellow colour of the letter and its headed paper). It is personally hand signed by Campbell Ricketts centrally folded where posted otherwise in truly excellent condition. Please see all our historic BBC musicians, orchestra leaders and composers secured from this same BBC collection at our store.
Before joining the BBC Campbell Ricketts was a professional wind musician serving in the prestigious Band of the Royal Artillery. Upon his military retirement in 1945, he successfully pivoted into broadcasting by joining the BBC . Throughout the late 1940s, he rose quickly through the production ranks, working initially as a programme manager and studio manager. e quickly gained a stellar reputation across the British music profession for his sharp ear and administrative precision. As a rising executive, he took charge of shaping the network's daytime and light orchestral output.
As a senior executive, Ricketts wielded massive influence over which live bands and light music ensembles secured coveted BBC airtime. He was famously protective of his musicians, with contemporary archives noting that his praise carried immense weight within the industry. For instance, he famously defended popular mid-century radio ensembles like Troise and his Banjoliers, writing that he had "never known them do other than a good broadcast.
