The group initially formed in England in 1980 under the name Modern Jazz. Under that moniker, the original lineup consisting of Andy O (vocals), Tim Parry (guitar), Mike Ansell (bass), and Mickey Sparrow (drums) released two independent singles, including "In My Sleep (I Shoot Sheep)". By 1982, they reshaped their sound, added live touring instrumentalists, and renamed themselves Blue Zoo after signing with Magnet Records. The band's musical style was highly experimental, bouncing between moody post-punk, synth-pop, and upbeat funk. They scored a minor UK chart placement in mid-1982 with "I'm Your Man" (reaching No. 55), but their major breakthrough came later that autumn. Released in August 1982, "Cry Boy Cry" became a major hit. It peaked at Number 13 on the UK Singles Chart in October 1982. It spent eight weeks in the Top 40 and reached No. 25 in Ireland.
