These rare, beautifully engraved ivory discs—traditionally referred to as "bones"—served as the official student passes for admission into the historic Royal Academy Schools. Introduced by an Academy committee following the turn of the 19th century to establish institutional order, each pass was custom inscribed with a student's name and the specific branch of study they were admitted to. The prominent inclusion of the date "1768" on the face of the pass pays tribute to the historic year of the institution's founding under King George III, celebrating over a century of continuous, elite architectural and artistic education in Britain
