Norman St John-Stevas (Baron St John of Fawsley) was a highly flamboyant and intellectually gifted British Conservative politician, academic, and author. Best remembered for his sharp wit and love of high-church aesthetics, he left a profound constitutional legacy by creating the modern House of Commons select committee system in 1979, which fundamentally enhanced Parliament's ability to scrutinise the British government. A prominent Roman Catholic legal scholar who initially trained for the priesthood, he served as the MP for Chelmsford from 1964 to 1987 and held the roles of Minister for the Arts and Leader of the House of Commons. Despite his political talents, his tendency to playfully mock and leak gossip about Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher—whom he famously nicknamed "The Blessed One" or "The Leaderene"—led to him being abruptly sacked from her Cabinet in 1981.
