Nathan Bedford Forrest was a prominent Confederate lieutenant general during the American Civil War who rose from the rank of private without any formal military training to become a highly feared cavalry commander. A deeply controversial figure, he amassed a pre-war fortune as a slave trader, oversaw the massacre of Black Union troops at Fort Pillow, and later served as the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan
