James Runciman Denny, MBE (1908–1978) was an eminent British conductor, music scholar, and executive who directed regional classical programming for the BBC during the late 1930s and 1940s. Like many broadcasters of his generation, Denny's rising BBC career was paused by World War II. He left the corporation in 1939 to join the British Armed Forces. In January 1940, he was commissioned into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He served with distinction, reaching the rank of Captain (temporary Major) and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in June 1944 for his wartime service. In 1946, he was officially appointed the Head of BBC Midland Regional Music.
