She joined the BBC in 1933 as a shorthand typist. She quickly showed a natural talent for production, becoming the personal assistant and secretary for the popular radio show In Town Tonight. When domestic television broadcasting was temporarily shut down during World War II, Gilbert worked for the BBC Overseas Unit, presenting radio programmes to boost the morale of British troops stationed abroad.  When television returned in 1946, she was appointed editor-in-chief of Picture Page, a highly popular topical magazine programme. Unable to find the perfect on-camera host, she famously stepped into the role herself.
