Baumgartner's first photographs were taken in 1929. Beginning of the 1930s he was discovered by the journalist Arnold KÔøΩbler. A first photo report was published 1935. Thereafter Baumgartner published in magazines such as Camera , you , the Swiss mirror , Switzerland and hairdryer. His photo books (from 1941) are primarily concerned with themes from his home canton of Thurgau. In 1937 he made   the acquaintance of the painter Adolf Dietrich, whom he repeatedly portrayed in the series. Baumgartner also photographed on his trips to Paris and Italy, the Balkans, the South of France, North Africa and the Sahara, Spain and Portugal, Sweden and Finland, the USA, Hungary, Belgium and Germany. On his trip around the world by ship he arrived in 1963 to Asia (Bombay, Colombo, Saigon, Hong Kong, Yokohama) and to the Americas (Mexico, USA).
